Paper by Cox and Pinfield published in JOLIS

A paper reporting the November 2012 survey of UK libraries activities and plans in relation to RDM has been published in OnlineFirst for Journal of Library and Information Science.

"Research data management and libraries: Current activities and future priorities"

This paper reports research carried out at the end of 2012 to survey UK universities to understand in detail the ways in which libraries are currently involved in research data management and the extent to which the development of research data management services is a strategic priority for them. The research shows that libraries were offering limited research data management services, with highest levels of activity in large research-intensive institutions. There were major challenges associated with skills gaps, resourcing and cultural change. However, libraries are currently involved in developing new institutional research data management policies and services, and see this as an important part of their future role. Priorities such as provision of research data management advisory and training services are emerging. A systematic comparison between these results and other recent studies is made in order to create a full picture of activities and trends. An innovation hype-cycle framework is deployed to understand possible futures and Abbott’s theory of professions is used to gain an insight into how libraries are competing to extend their jurisdiction whilst at the same time working collaboratively with other stakeholders.

The paper is also available from the institutional repository, WRRO.

RDMRose to participate in LIRG event with UEL's TRaD

LIRG Event: Research Data Management – challenges and opportunities for libraries

The impact of “Big Data” on our working lives cannot be ignored…..

The management of research data is increasingly being recognised as a responsibility of all higher education institutions, and the evidence suggests that libraries could and in many cases already are playing a leading role in supporting RDM.

This event will discuss the wider issues of research data management for the profession, how the workforce can be developed to deal with the challenges it represents and to provide an introduction to the learning materials that are now available and how they can be reused and maintained by the community as a collective resource.

The event is being organised by LIRG, the Library and Information Research Group, and will include highlights from two JISC projects, RDMRose and TrAd. Join us at the session to find out more on this expanding area and help shape the debate.

Version one of the RDMRose learning materials now available

The JISC funded project RDMRose, a collaboration between the university libraries of Leeds, Sheffield and York, and the Sheffield iSchool has been developing learning materials about Research Data Management tailored for information professionals as an Open Educational Resource (OER).

The learning materials have been designed for use as self-supported CPD as well as in taught class room sessions.

Version one of the RDMRose learning materials are now available.

You might want to try our self-assessment questionnaire "Are you RDM Ready?" This prompts you to rate your own knowledge and also the priority you give to different RDM related activities. It then directs you to the parts of the learning materials that are most useful to you.

The project welcomes comments and feedback.

RDM in libraries survey

You are invited to take part in a survey on library roles in research data
management: https://survey.shef.ac.uk/limesurvey/index.php?sid=41119&lang=en

The survey has been designed to give the community a clear picture of the extent to which libraries are currently involved in research data management (RDM) work, and the extent to which they regard different aspects of RDM to be strategic priorities for the next three years.

As you will know, this issue touches directly on one of RLUK's strategic priorities and so we are keen to track progress in this area. The survey has been tested already on some of RLUK colleagues who have kindly provided very useful feedback that has enabled us to refine the questions. So we hope now that the questionnaire corresponds well to the key issues as you see them. We believe that the results will be of direct interest to colleagues in UK HE libraries and that we can use the data as a benchmark to measure developments in future. We are hoping all of this will mean that we get a good response.

Poster at JISC MRD Workshop

On 24-25 October the RDMRose project presented a poster at the JISC MRD Programme Workshop in Nottingham. It was a good opportunity to discuss the progress that JISC MRD projects had made and the challenges they faced.

Our poster described the aims of our project and the intended learning outcomes of the curriculum that we are designing. More importantly, it also listed the potential RDM roles that librarians could take on, and how these are aligned with their existing roles.

The poster also had an interactive aspect. The workshop participants were encouraged to vote which of these potential RDM roles the Library should prioritize. People were asked to put a blue dot next to all RDM roles they would like to see prioritised. The results are on the photo below.

JISC funds the White Rose Consortium of academic libraries and the Sheffield iSchool to develop Research Data Management (RDM) learning materials for LIS professionals

JISC funds the White Rose Consortium of academic libraries and the Sheffield iSchool to develop Research Data Management (RDM) learning materials for LIS professionals

Sheffield, 1st September 2012
JISC have funded the White Rose Consortium of the libraries of the universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York and the Sheffield iSchool to develop learning materials about Research Data Management tailored for the needs of LIS professionals.
The project, RDMRose, will develop learning materials to be made available as Open Educational Resources for individual professionals to study as CPD and for other LIS educators to reuse, as well as for use in courses at Sheffield. Learning materials should begin to be available from January 2013.
RDM refers to “the organisation of data, from its entry to the research cycle through to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results”[1]. The need for universities to put in place support for Research Data Management has been driven by the data deluge and research funders’ mandates. LIS services around the world are currently trying to understand how they can best support researchers to follow good RDM practices. What is involved will vary between institutions, but a number of roles are emerging, such as in influencing policy, teaching students and researchers about best practice and offering advisory services.
RDMRose will clarify LIS roles in RDM and provide learning materials to help professionals acquire the skills they need to create dynamic and innovative services.
